LEVEL 5
Students will solidify their skills with two- and three-digit addition and subtraction. There is more
exposure to arithmetic patterns and problem-solving techniques, as well as arithmetical properties and
their relationships with numbers. This level also introduces work with basic concepts of
multiplication.

Sublevel 5.1
Students will practice addition and subtraction with regrouping (carrying and borrowing) with the goal
of increasing the comfort level for problems with numbers up to 1000. Students will also work with
the fundamentals of rounding.

Sublevel 5.2
This sublevel introduces multiplication through ‘repetitive addition’.

Sublevel 5.3
Students review and reinforce their work from earlier sublevels.

Sublevel 5.4
Students will use concepts relating to order of operations, practice estimation of sums and
differences, and do some very basic work with negative numbers.

Sublevel 5.5
Here, multiplication practice will be expanded up through 12; different symbols will be used to expose
students to the variety of ways multiplication is represented in mathematics.

Sublevel 5.6
Word problems are used to practice the application of addition and subtraction in a ‘real world”
context.

Final Review & Test
Students will review all the skills covered at this level. After the review process, there will be a
final test to make sure conceptual understanding is developing properly, before moving ahead.
